Different languages enable different algorithms backed by different libraries and compiled and linked by different toolchains. "Speed" is not a term you'll find in any compiler literature, and all this discussion is a lot of hand-waving nonsense. It's very difficult to generalize about the performance of memory management. You're not the only one who doesn't have hard statistics. While I do not have any hard statistics to back up my point, exhibit A is Apple's move to full Garbage Collection in XCode, followed by its quick deprecation when iOS came into the picture (in favor of the better-performing but more restrictive Automatic Reference Counting). Though this article mentions many good points, I'm surprised it does not take into account the impact of automatic memory management.
